The Shire of Meekatharra is renewing calls for urgent State and Federal Government action following ongoing serious vehicle accidents and fatalities along the Goldfields Highway between Wiluna and Meekatharra.
For years, the State Government has committed to sealing sections of the highway and improving safety along the corridor. However, significant portions of the route remain in poor condition, with local communities continuing to witness tragic and preventable road incidents.
Shire President Councillor Harvey Nichols said enough was enough.
“Our communities are tired of promises without action. People are continuing to lose their lives on this road while commitments to improve and seal the highway remain unfulfilled,” Cr Nichols said.
“The Goldfields Highway is a vital regional transport route used by local residents, freight operators, mining companies, tourists and emergency services every single day. It deserves the same level of investment and safety standards expected in metropolitan areas.”
Cr Nichols said the condition of the highway places motorists at risk and creates additional pressure on emergency services responding to crashes in remote conditions.
“The reality is regional people are travelling long distances on roads which have not received the attention they urgently need. We are calling on the State Government to deliver on its commitments and prioritise these upgrades before more lives are lost.”
The Shire is advocating for:
- Accelerated sealing and reconstruction work on remaining unsealed sections
- Increased road maintenance funding
- Additional overtaking opportunities and shoulder widening
- Improved signage and fatigue management infrastructure
- Expanded roadside rest areas for heavy vehicles and travellers
The Shire also reminds motorists travelling through the region to drive to conditions, avoid fatigue, carry adequate supplies and ensure vehicles are suitable for remote travel.
The Shire of Meekatharra extends its condolences to all families and communities impacted by recent road tragedies.
